15 Lessons from 15 Years of KC Projects

Fifteen years in business will teach you a few things … some the hard way, most in real time, and all of them invaluable.

As we celebrate 15 years of KC Projects, I’ve found myself reflecting not just on how far we’ve come, but on what it actually takes to build something that lasts in an industry that never sits still. Public relations is constantly evolving, but the foundation of what we do hasn’t changed: relationships matter, great stories win, and showing up consistently (with a little grit and a lot of strategy) is what separates the good from the exceptional.

Over the years, I’ve collected my fair share of lessons, some obvious, some earned, and a few I wish I had learned sooner. From picking up the phone instead of hiding behind email, to trusting your team, to staying calm when everything feels urgent (because in PR, it usually is), these 15 lessons are a snapshot of what has shaped both me and this company.

1. Relationships are everything.
PR is built on trust—with clients, media, and each other.

2. Pick up the phone.
Real conversations still open doors emails can’t.

3. Great stories always win.
A strong narrative beats a good pitch every time.

4. Surround yourself with people smarter than you.
The best teams make everyone better.

5. Hustle matters.
Success in PR comes from persistence and follow-through.

6. Creativity is your greatest asset.
The best campaigns come from bold ideas.

7. Listen more than you talk.
Understanding a client’s story is the first step to telling it well.

8. Celebrate the wins—big and small.
Every headline, event, and milestone matters.

9. Adapt or get left behind.
Media and marketing are constantly evolving.

10. Reputation is everything.
Protect it, nurture it, and never take it for granted.

11. Be the calm in the chaos.
PR often happens in high-pressure moments.

12. Say yes to opportunity.
Some of the best growth comes from unexpected places.

13. Your team defines your culture.
The people around you shape the company’s future.

14. Never stop learning.
The best communicators stay curious.

15. The best chapters are still ahead.
After 15 years, we’re just getting started.

If there’s one thing I know for sure, it’s this: we’re still having a lot of fun doing what we love, and genuinely grateful for the clients, partners, and work that continue to inspire us every day.

Cheers to the future.
